Former steam-powered saw mill, corn mill, smithy and ancillary
rooms forming part of a model farm. Built 1845 by W.A.F. Saunders
of Wennington Hall. Local coursed freestone;' blue Ulverston
slate. Symmetrical 2-storeyed range, 2:4:2, the centre window
bays under a gable, with slightly recessed lean-to extensions
to left and right. Stone end stacks. Bays 2 and 7 with large
elliptically headed keyed wagon entrances giving into saw mill/
joiners' shop and straw barn respectively, with opening above.
Window and taking-in doorway to bays 1 and 8. Central block
(corn mill to left, threshing/winnowing room to right each
with separate doorways); openings to upper floors, some with
sashes with small panes. Gable opening above datestone (eroded).
Lean-to at left contained smithy with window above doorway;
lean-to right contained cart shed, now with enlarged entry.
All openings under stone lintels with stone sills. Stack and
engine house to rear. This range forms the mechanised and
food-processing unit of the farm and was completely separated
from the livestock shelters (ref.5/192) to the S, with which
it groups.
