- II
House. C18, enlarged and remodlled in early C19, altered and extended in late
C19 and extended again in C20. Flemish bond red brick. Welsh slate roof with
gabled ends and wooden modillion eaves cornice. Brick axial and gable end
stacks with yellow clay pots.
Plan and development: The original circa C18 house was a single depth 2-room
plan arrangement which now occupies the centre room (hall) and right hand
dining room of the present house. In the early C19 the house was
substantially enlarged (and refaced) by the addition of another principal room
at the left end with a large bedchamber above; the left hand roan of the
original house becoming the central entrance hall with a staircase at the back
and a large 2-storey outhut was built at the rear for the service rooms, the
kitchen to the right. It was probably in the later C19 that the left hand
rear rooms were extended by the addition of bays at the back and the pantry
and scullery were rehoused in a single storey outshut on the right hand side.
Attached to the front (south) of the side outshut there is a Second World War
air raid shelter. In the late C20 a conservatory was added to the left of the
front of the house.
Exterior: 3 storeys. Symmetrical widely-spaced 3-window south front. Later
C19 sash windows with margin panes and flat brick arches on the ground and
first floors and early C19 8-pane sashes on the second floor. Flanking the
central doorway are 2 small C19 round-headed sashes with margin panes, the
left hand one and the window to its left are new doorways inside the late C20
flat roof conservatory. Central doorway with good early C19 wooden portico;
the Tuscan columns have fluted necking and support an entablature canopy;
rectangular fanlight with patterned lead tracery and panelled reveals; the
door is C20. Projecting at the right of the front a Second World War air raid
shelter with embattled coping. On the left (west) end a single storey canted
bay window with egg-and-date cornice. At the rear the roof is carried down
over the 2 storey outshut which has various sash windows and to the right 2
single storey bays.
Interior: Most of the C19 joinery is intact including panelled window
shutters, panelled doors, some early C19 and others later C19. On the first
floor there are C18 2-panel doors and also on the second floor where there is
a complete set. The early C19 staircase at the back of the hall has an open
string with scrolled tread ends, stick balusters and moulded mahogamy handrail
with ivory inlaid circle on the wreathed curtail over a column newel. The
halls moulded doorframes have segmental heads. The hall has a C20 chimney-
piece and the left hand (drawing) room has a C20 Tudor style chimneypiece.
The right hand (dining) room has a moulded plaster cornice with a reeded
ceiling border. The rear left hand room has a moulded plaster cornice and
early C20 mahogany chimneypiece. The dairy or pantry has slate shelves. The
main (west) bedchamber has a high ceiling with a moulded cornice and reeded
border with rosettes at intervals; 2 large doorways with fluted architraves
and large 6-panel doors, and a white marble chimneypiece with detached Tuscan
columns. The cellar is brick vaulted.
