House. "RAA RA 1697" (Ralph Astley) on porch. Hammer-dressed
stone with stone slate roof. 3 x 3 bays with 3 storeys and
C19 additions on left and rear. 3 of the elevations are
characterised by triple gables. The central door has a
pitched canopy with carved stone ogee-shaped gable supported
on enriched brackets. Part of the front and right walls and
the majority of windows on the front and right elevations
have been rebuilt and C19 buttresses were added to either
side of the door (dated 1888 TM with a coat of arms).
Windows generally have 2 to 6 lights and double-chamfered
stone mullions and hoodmoulds but in each gable on the side
elevations and the central one on the front is a stepped 3-
light window with arched lights and stepped hoodmoulds in
the Yorkshire tradition. A lead rainwater trough with cast
grape vine pattern continues round 2 sides. C19 additions
were executed in a similar style and in similar materials.
Chimney stacks rebuilt in C20. Interior: in essence the
arrangement is 2 rooms deep and 2 wide. A fine dogleg
staircase continues to the top of the house; it has a
closed string with pulvinated frieze, turned balusters, a
deep moulded handrail and capped newel posts with recessed
arched panels. Moulded fire surrounds remain in some rooms,
one with a re-set carved oak overmantel. Ovolo-moulded floor
beams. Many C17 panelled doors within eared architrave
surrounds which incorporate carved rosettes. Another door is
C19 and has inlaid decoration. The house is a particularly
important survival with notable and unusual features both
inside and out.
