Description

BOLTON ROAD WEST,
Hazelhurst Engineering Works with Nos 258 to 264 (even)

II

Circa 1820. Purpose-built to gather former cottage hand-loom weavers under one roof
to improve efficiency and maintain competition of hand-loom weaving with newer
methods of production. Coursed, square rubble. Three storeys. Flush with pavement
of load, aligned with adjacent cottage terrace. Continuous band of 23 weavers' windows
on top floor, below eaves, separated by square mullions; each sub-divided by
wooden mullions into three lights, with transom two-thirds towards top. Similar band
of windows in each gable. First floor has five similar windows on the left but not
in band; to right are five larger, more widely-spaced sash windows. On ground floor,
below the left-hand five, are three equally-spaced similar but taller windows. To right
of these is an archway, with segmental keyed head, now blocked. Matching sash windows
below 2nd and 3rd windows of first floor. Door with cornice head to right of each.
Two 3-window bays below right-hand sashes, with tall cornice-head door between. All
three doors were probably to the residences in right-hand end of works. Only remaining
building with true weavers' windows in Bury MB.
