Town house C.1750-70. Corner site with Charles Street. Blackened brick. Four
storeys, basement and pedimented dormers in slate mansard. First floor brick plat band
and stuccoed sill band. Three windows. Ground floor has wooden Ionic columned
doorcase with pediment left and right of centre. Revealed sashes under flat gauged
brick arches. Stone cornice at third floor level, parapet with coping. Return in
Charles Street (No 52A) is of 3 storeys with 2 tiers of dormers in slated mansard. Two
full height canted bays of 3 sashes each per floor and a 2 storey 2 window extension to
left hand. Stone architrave doorcase with cornice on consoles, panelled door and
patterned fanlight. Interior of No 52A has cut string stone staircase with delicate
wrought iron work balustrade. Cast iron area railings with urn finials to both fronts,
No 52 with wrought link extinguishers. Interior of No 52 has turned balusters
staircase screened by Ionic columns on pedestals, taken up as pilaster rhythm round hall
above the dado etc. Part of best surviving terrace of town houses in the square.
