Terraced town houses 1811 by Joseph Parkinson, for
the Portman Estate. Brown brick with banded stucco rustication to ground
floor; No. 48 entirely stuccoed; concealed slate roofs. Originally part of
a complete terrace balancing the east side of the square, Nos. 1 to 21 q.v.
(for surviving north end see Nos. 27, 27A and 28 to 32 consec), with
larger end house, No. 48, as terminal pavilion dressed with Ionic order and
pedimented attic. 4 and 5 storeys on basement. Each front 3 windows wide
with a 5-window front to No. 48. Doorways to left with inset Greek Doric
columns panelled doors and semicircular fanlights; entrance to No. 48 in
return with mid C.19 stuccoed Ionic porch. Recessed sashes, some retaining
glazing bars, under gauged flat arches to brick upper floors. No. 48 has
1st and 2nd floors articulated by Ionic flanking pilasters and engaged
columns to centre, carrying entablature; the attic storey with pilaster
strips, cornice and blocking course and pediment over central 3 bays. The
remainder have continuous cast iron balconies to 1st floor and crowning
stucco cornices and blocking courses. Cast iron area railings with urn
finials.
