Government offices. 1909 by J. W. Murray, the rear extension 1951-52 by Ministry
of Works architect C. E. Mee. Portland stone, slate and terrace roofs. Murray's
building a more restrained continuation of Brydon and Young's government office
Baroque; Mee's extension a well proportioned and subtly detailed stripped
classical exercise. Murray's building of 5 storeys composed as ground floor and
mezzanine on basement, 2 main storeys and attic storey . 5 windows wide to front
and both returns. The podium, with channelled rustication, has central projecting
portal with large broken segmental pediment. Recessed glazing bar sashes,
corniced or pedimented on,main storeys where the central 3 are set behind Ionic
colonnade in antis; outer bays have 1st floor windows and lunettes above set in
large through storey niches with enriched keystones. 3 enriched oculi to attic
between blind, channelled panels. Entablature beneath 2nd floor with balustrades
in front of windows; main entablature over 3rd floor and secondary cornice to
attic crowned by balustraded parapet. Similar but simplified fenestration to
returns. Mee's extension of 5 storeys and set back attic storey with slightly
advanced wings in a compactly massed stepped composition; central entrance with
large coat of arms, flanked by allegories sculpted by James Woodford; 1st floor
recession of wall plane creates pilaster effect.
