House. c1740, possibly by Robert Carr (Horbury). Ashlar facade, hammer-dressed
stone to sides and rear, stone slate roof. 3 storeys. 5-bay symmetrical facade.
Plinth; ground-floor and 1st-floor sill bands, broad 1st-floor band. Doorway
with Doric pilasters and inner architrave surround has frieze decorated with
triglyphs and guttae, casement-moulded cornice. Apron above to 1st-floor window
with inner architrave and swept-shouldered outer architrave, consoles, pulvinated
frieze and triangular pediment. Other bays have sash windows with unusual
rusticated jambs and thick glazing bars. Those to 2nd floor smaller and with
6-pane sashes. Bold bracketed casement-moulded cornice returns slightly to left
gable. Coped gables with kneelers and tall ashlar stacks. Attached to right is
South Wing (q.v.) at right angles. Rear: 2 visible bays. Doorway with arched
stairwindow above. 2nd bay has 12-pane C18 sashes with thick glazing bars and
2nd-floor windows with 6-pane sashes.

Interior: front door leads into a sitting room with fine modillioned ceiling
cornice, a doorway with eared architrave with pulvinated frieze and dentil
casement-moulded cornice leads,to the right of main door, into a square room
with carved panelled dado and 3 doorways with finely-carved architraves,
6-panelled doors and friezes with dentil cornices; the window shutters are carved;
richly-moulded ceiling cornice with dentils and modillions. Stair-hall, to rear,
has dog-leg cantilevered open-string staircase with ramped handrail and decorative
cast-iron balusters; panelled dado; top-lit with circular light with bullseye
glazing; modillioned ceiling cornice; set below is extensive vaulted cellar with
recesses for bins of wine; at the half-landing is arched panelled doorway (blocked)
through to the South Wing (q.v.) with eared architrave. servants' back-stair,
dog-leg with finely-turned wooden balusters, leads to attic and 2nd-floor rooms
which have contemporary fireplaces with decorative cast-iron grates. The square
sitting room chamber has panelled dado and fireplace with eared architrave and
richly-decorated ceiling cornice.

A fine house with a good interior.
