Obelisk and enclosing railings. c1768-1772 by John Carr (Linstrum, p373) for George Fox-Lane, second Lord Bingley as a memorial to his son Robert Fox-Lane. Excellently-worked ashlar, cast-iron railings. Tall obelisk, square on plan. Base has white marble tablets to three faces and carved stone coat-of-arms to east face, each set in a square frame with fluted border.
Each tablet engraved:
THIS OBELISK
IS ERECTED BY
GEORGE FOX LANE
LORD BINGLEY
AND HARRIET BENSON HIS WIFE
IN MEMORY OF THEIR SON
ROBERT FOX LANE
GRANDSON AND HEIR TO
ROBERT BENSON LORD BINGLEY
WHOSE MEMORY IS WORTHY
TO BE REVERED BY POSTERITY"
North tablet only continues:
HE DIED ON THE 28th OF MAY 1768
IN THE (30) YEAR OF
HIS AGE"
Bold cyma-and casement-moulded cornice, moulded plinth, tall slightly-tapering shaft surmounted by giant urn. Surrounding the monument is enclosure bounded by low ashlar wall surmounted by cast-iron railings: simple square rods with top rail, flame-twist finials and circular columns with ball finials to corners.
Part of a formal garden. From the obelisk ten avenues fan out. See the Rotunda (q.v.).
