School. 1843. Harvey Lonsdale Elmes. Red sandstone, with
slate roof. Tudor Gothic. 3 storeys and 13 bays, end and
centre bays project, the central bay with gable. Moulded
plinth, weathering over ground floor and top cornice and
parapet. Windows of 4 lights with 4-centred heads, those to
1st and 2nd floor in surrounds with panelling between
floors. End bays have 2-storey canted oriels with moulded
bases and embattled parapets with arcading. Entrance bay
framed by projecting octagonal angle buttresses with 4-
centred arch with hood mould and angel tops. 4-centred
entrance with carved spandrels and pierced balcony over.
Gable has arms and scroll, between pinnacles ending in
decorative caps. Embattled parapet with figures in canopied
niches. Octagonal lecture hall to rear. Splendid entrance
hall with clustered iron columns, 4-centred arches to
vaulting, Gothic iron staircase balustrading, panelled
ceiling with carved bosses.
