G.V. II*
House, now subdivided into flats. C17, with C18 and C19 additions and
alterations. Dressed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings.
Stone coped gables and finial at north end, two stone ridge stacks, one
near south end, plain tiled roof. L-plan originally with circa 1700 parallel
range added to rear of front. Two storey with garrets, 4 bay facade with
plinth and narrow moulded eaves cornice. Off centre early C18 double doors
with six panels and rectangular overlight having eared stone surround,
pulvinated frieze and pediment over, flanked by to the left a single two light
C19 casement window with stone mullion and to right 2 similar. The south
elevation has part of a moulded string course and restored windows matching
those at the front. Traces of an earlier C17 phase with moulded plinth can
also be seen on the south side. Interior; a fine early C18 dog leg staircase
with turned balusters rises in a hall with contemporary decorated plaster
ceilings. Principal rooms on ground floor have good early C18 oak dado
panelling. At the front of the house is a C18 low stone balustrade with shaped
balusters on a base of large pecked stone blocks. It is open in front of the
door, and was evidently intended to lend dignity to the facade.
