House. Early to mid-C17 with late C16 core; late C20 fenestrations
and other alterations and additions. Red brick with yellow/grey sandstone
dressings, incorporating timber framed core. Plain tile roofs. U-
plan. 2 storeys and attic. Chamfered stone plinth and parapeted gables
with stone kneelers and copings. Pair of large external dressed stone
and brick lateral stacks with chamfered offsets. North-east (entrance)
front: 3 gables. 1-:1-:1- bays with recessed centre. C20 four-light
wooden mullioned and transomed windows.Central first-floor 5-light window
and 2-light attic casements. Central C20 flat-roofed porch with dentil
brick cornice and parapet with reused moulded stone coping. 1:2:1 glazed
C20 doors. Small ground-floor windows flanking porch. Rear: parapeted
gable only to central projecting bay. Ground-floor C20 wooden cross
window to right with C17 chamfered sandstone reveals and evidence of
former stone mullion. Interior: entrance hall with chamfered ceiling
beams and moulded beam with broach stops. Neo-Jacobean staircase, introduced
in the late C20. Right-hand ground-floor room with moulded and chamfered
cross-beamed ceiling and stone fireplace with moulded Tudor arch.
Remains of former timber framing in left-hand ground-floor room with
evidence of former jetty to front including a chamfered jowl post with
chamfered bracket and first-floor wall plate. Roof not inspected.
The left-hand wing was probably formerly timber framed and jettied to
the front. It was probably rebuilt in brick after the house was extended
to the north-west as there are some detail differences (no plinth or
quoins to front etc.). The brick is only a racing onto rubblestone.
The house formerly had a C17 nine-light double-chamfered wooden mullioned
and transomed window, removed in the late C20. Shropshire County S.M.R.,
