House, latterly inn, now house and inn. Early C18. Red brick (addition
with tuck pointing) with painted sandstone ashlar dressings; plain tile
roof. 2 storeys and attic over basement. Chamfered plinth, raised
chamfered quoins, plat band, and moulded stone eaves cornice; central
break with quoins and oeil-de-boeuf with moulded architrave in tympanum
of steep triangular-pedimented gable. Parapeted gable ends with
chamfered stone copings and moulded kneelers; integral brick end stack to
left and external brick end stack to right. Pair of gabled dormers
with 2-light wooden casements and triangular-pedimented gables. 2:1:2
bays; segmental-headed wooden cross windows with painted keystones.
Central C18 door with raised and fielded panels (top 2 glazed), moulded
architrave with keystone, and early C19 Tuscan porch with frieze,
moulded cornice and locking course with the Corbet rebus (raven) in
raised centre. Early C18 addition set back to right: 2 storeys, plinth,
raised chamfered quoins, plat band and wooden dentil eaves cornice;
integral brick end stack to right. 2-window front; segmental-headed
2- and 3-light wooden mullioned and transomed casements with keystones.
2 steps up to C18 door off-centre to right with 6 raised and fielded panels
and doorcase with Doric pilaster strips and carved brackets supporting
flat hood with moulded cornice and blocking course. Mid-to late C19
service wing adjoining to right of no special interest. Mid-to late
C19 rear wing with 2 brick stacks. Interior: early C18 staircase
with open string, 3 turned balusters per tread, turned newel posts,
ramped moulded handrail and raised and fielded ramped wainscot panelling.
Left-hand ground-floor room with C18 raised and fielded wainscot
panelling. Right-hand ground-floor room with large open fireplace
(altered in late C18) and C18 arched wall cupboard, 6-panelled doors
with moulded architraves. It has been suggested (Pevsner) that when
the early C19 porch was added the former C18 doorcase was reused on the
entrance to the 2-storey wing. This is a particularly fine example of
an early C18 house and is similar in design to Higher House (q.v.).
