17/3 The Manor House
28.10.60

GV II

House, latterly vicarage. Early and mid-C17 with mid-to late C19 addition
and probably C20 alterations. Dressed grey Grinshill sandstone, partly
cement rendered (lined as ashlar); timber framed with painted brick
nogging on high painted dressed sandstone plinth; plain tile roof.
Framing: square panels (2 from sole plate to wall plate) with long
straight tension braces. L-plan. 2 storeys and 2 storeys and attic.
Chamfered plinth and coped parapeted gables; 2 integral brick end stacks
at rear of main block. 3-window front; 4-light double-chamfered
mullioned and transomed stone windows; pair of large gables with 2-light
double chamfered mullioned stone attic windows. Rendered central 2
storey gabled porch, probably altered in C20 with first-floor 2-light
wooden casement and ground-floor keyed segmental arch with 6-panelled
door and small window set back behind. Painted sundial with wrought-
iron gnomon to left of first-floor left-hand window. Blocked attic
window in left-hand return front. C19 two-storey addition set back to
left with polygonal end, hipped roof, plinth, coved cornice brick stack at rear,
and leaded one-light wooden cross window with double-chamfered reveals
on each floor. Right-hand return front: 2-light double-chamfered
mullioned attic window and 3-light double-chamfered stone mullioned and
transomed windows to left on ground and first floors. Rear: C20 raking
dormer and 2-light double-chamfered stone mullioned ground-floor window to
left at rear Mid-C17 timber framed rear wing with C20 lean-to porch in
angle. Interior not inspected but likely to be of interest. The garden
wall at the front (q.v.) is dated 1694 which is possibly the date of part
of the house though Pevsner quotes the date as 1624 which seems more likely.
