Walnut Cottage
II
Squatter's cottage. C17, extended late C18 with later additions and
alterations. Timber framed with plaster and painted brick infill, now
mainly re-built and extended in roughly coursed gritstone rubble, machine
tile roof. Original single-cell plan extended by addition of stone-built
range at right-angles to east. One storey and attic; framing: partly
exposed to north gable end of C17 part (square panels and V-struts from
collar) but largely hidden behind early C19 lean-to incorporating large
external stone stack with red brick shaft and bread oven; south side:
irregular fenestration, one mid-C19 casement with segmental brick head
to first floor of gable and similar window to right of boarded door under
C20 gabled wooden porch, small fixed -light window to left and C20 gabled
dormer in roof slope; prominent external end stack to right with red brick
shaft has early C19 timber framed addition abutting, the front wall of
which has been re-built in C20 red brick. Interior: C17 part has chamfered
spine beam and heavy joists to ground floor.
