Description

BOMERE HEATH C.P. BERWICK ROAD (west side)
SJ 41 SE
10/82 North Lodge and No. 1, The
29.1.52 Lodge, and adjoining gates
and gate piers and railings
(formerly listed as Lodges to
Berwick House and centre gates)

- II

Pair of entrance lodges and gates, gate piers and railings. Late C18 or
early C19, possibly by Robert Mylne, and enlarged and top storey added
c.1878, probably by Stevens of Birmingham. Grey sandstone ashlar,
partly altered with render lined as ashlar. Pyramidal slate roof,
extended with hip at rear. Square plan with additions to rear. Two
storeys. Each lodge with plinth, moulded stone eaves cornice, and stone
lateral stack at rear with chamfered offset and moulded cornice. Two
first-floor 3-pane sashes with painted stone cills and central ground
floor 6-panelled door (lower 2 panels flush) with moulded architrave and
Tuscan stone porch with frieze, cornice and blocking course. Elevations
onto road consist of glazing bar sash within large round-arched recess.
Late C19 cast-iron gates between lodges, probably by Stevens. 1:1:2:2:2:1:1
rhythm. Spearhead railings and dog bars, top bar ramped up to central
gates. Panelled cast-iron piers (raised and fielded to central gate piers)
with moulded plinths and cornices, and urn finials. Large pair of central
gates with scrolled dog bars, patterned lock bars and ramped top bars.
Smaller flanking pedestrian gates with scrolled dog bars, patterned lock
bars and arched top bars. The Lodges flank the main entrance into the park
surrounding Berwick House (q.v.). Robert Mylne is known to have carried
out some work at Berwick House in 1780 for Thomas Jelf Powys and it is
possible that the lodges are his work. Stevens made some alterations and
additions to Berwick House in 1878 and was probably responsible for the
alterations to the lodges and for the gates. Colvin, p. 577.
