BINWESTON
Cruck Barn approx 20m north-east of Binweston Farmhouse
GV
II*
Tithe barn, now cowshed. C14 or C15, extended C17, now encased in
C20 cowshed. Cruck-framed with outer walls totally rebuilt in concrete
blocks; slate roof. Tithe barn originally of 6 framed bays extended
by further 3 or 4 bays to north-east in C17; whole encased in C20 cowshed.
Surrounded by late C20 farmbuildings to north and south. Interior:
7 massive true cruck trusses, 4 to south-west with evidence for arch
bracing, although bracing itself now survives to only one truss, V-
struts from collars and mortices for trenched double purlins; 3 crucks
to north-east are less substantial without arch bracing and the 2 north-
easternmost appear to have undergone some reconstruction with inserted
tie beams. Final 3 trusses to north-east are probably C17 and have
long raking struts from tie beams to principal rafters. Evidence for
north-east gable end destroyed by late C20 rebuilding. Graded II*
as a remarkable survival of a medieval agricultural building, not commonly
found in Shropshire. Alcock (1981) p.145.
