Lower Ridge Farmhouse

Farmhouse, now house. Late C16, extended C17 and eaves raised late
C18 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with plaster
and painted brick infill and painted rubblestone to gable ends, slate
roofs. Original plan a 2-cell cottage with end stack to left, later
extended to form baffle-entry plan of four framed bays; eaves of C17 addition
raised late C18. One storey and gable-lit attic to two right bays and
two storeys to left bays. Framing: two tall rectangular panels to original
wall-plate with later horizontal timbers, one small rectangular panel
above to C17 addition. Windows all late C20 casements, two on each floor to left part
and one on right to right section; late C19 porch at junction between
2 sections has boarded inner door; late C20 red brick axial ridge stack
to left of right section with external stack to left gable end of C17
part. INTERIOR: timber frame exposed to original back wall; 2 chamfered
spine beams with stepped stops and joists to right ground-floor room,
which has inglenook fireplace with moulded wooden lintel; deep-chamfered
spine beams with straight-cut stops to two other ground-floor rooms.
Roof trusses covered by plasterboard at time of re-survey (November
1985). Prominent C20 Lean-to addition to rear is not of special architectural
interest.
