Description

WEST FELTON C.P. SUTTON
SJ 32 NE
8/81 Barn and attached wall
approx 20m north-east
of Sutton Farmhouse
II
Barn. Probably mid-to late C18, remodelled early C19 reusing architectural
fragments, probably brought from elsewhere; minor later alterations.
Uncoursed limestone rubble with alternating boulder quoins; hipped graded
slate roof. Original building probably a small rectangular agricultural
building, re-roofed and re-fenestrated in early C19 and simultaneously
(or a little later) extended to left and right. 2 levels. Main range
has C19 casement directly below eaves to right and reused ogee-headed windows
with Y-tracery (blind to heads) to left and right of central blind doorway
with Y-tracery to pointed tympanum. Entrance through reused stone pilastered
doorcase with bracketed hood to right wall. Extension to left has C19
casement directly below eaves with segmental-headed vehicle entrance below.
Set-back addition to right has C19 casement immediately below eaves and
stable door directly below. Wall attached to front right corner of main
range. Probably early C19. Uncoursed limestone rubble with stone coping
ramped up to centre over flat-headed arch with large stone lintel. The
date of the reused windows and doors is problematical but is probably late
C17 or early C18. Sutton Farmhouse is not included in this list.
