Pair of cottages formerly one small house, C16, timber framed and plastered.
Roof thatched and half hipped on N end, gabled on S end. 1 storey and attics
with 2 eyebrow dormers over W elevation. No. 71 has C20, leaded light
casements, white weatherboarding on N gable elevation, ridge line stack and
C20 rear extension. No. 73 has C20 porch made of medieval timber and ogee
doorhead reused, a projecting cast iron and leaded light window on S end, old
cast iron window in rear and C20 lean-to extension on S end. Interior reveals
former open hall house with solar/parlour at N end. This has remains of 5 light
diamond mullioned window in first floor W wall. Straight bracing, jowled posts,
and raised collar tiebeam less, truss over hall to support windbraced side
purlin roof. Later inserted inglenook fireplace with timber mantel beam. No.
73 is part C18 extension with probable ship's mast reused as bridging joists
and part the service end of the earlier open hall house.
