The Old House

Manor house. Probably late C14 with C16, C17 and C20 additions. Regular coursed
ironstone with Collyweston slate roof. Originally open hall plan, now T-shape.
2 storeys with attic. Main front of 3-window range of 2-, 3- and 4-light stone
mullion windows with leaded lights. Central C20 door has moulded stone surround.
Gabled cross wings breaks forward to right. Large 3-stage buttress to left of
centre. Ashlar gable parapets, kneelers and finial and stone stack at ridge. 2
bays to left are remains of the medieval hall. Elevation to right of main front
has 2-window range of stone mullion windows with large buttress between. Rear
has gabled cross wing to left with one C14 two-light window with Y-tracery to
first floor. probably originally forming part of the medieval solar. Central
gabled staircase projection is probably C16. Similar gable to far right is early
C20. Single-storey C20 extensions to left. Interior: entrance hall follows line
of screens passage and has 2 C14 arch-head openings in wall to right. Room to
left of entrance was originally the hall, now sub-divided and has open fireplace
with bressumer, probably inserted C16. Room to right of entrance has open
fireplace with bressumer and with C17 fireplace with 4-centred head. Room to
rear right of entrance also has open fireplace with bressumer. Stone spiral
staircase from ground to first floor and wooden spiral to attic. First floor
room to rear right has C17 fireplace with 4-centred head.
