South west side: The device on the central chimney is a grail within a regular pentagon - symbolic of spiritual reward through religious devotion. The sculptures, each halfway up a set of eight paired, twisted, columns, on the sides of the gables, have come back to gentlemen and eagles (having been mutilated boars on the north side). In the right gable, God sets the Earth in motion, and the date 1580 - the date when Tresham converted to Roman Catholicism (and the ball started rolling for him). (Photo Jul 2012).
