Former courtyard houses now house, dentist and doctors' surgeries and shops.
Late C16 onwards. Brick. Rendered. Flint with brick and stone dressings.
Pantile and plaintile roofs. Courtyard formed by 4 consecutive building
phases. Late C16 range:- long range parallel to and away from street-line
extending northwards beyond courtyard. Courtyard facade:- 2 storeys. 4
first floor windows. C18 panelled door at extreme right having a moulded
surround continuing over a s4mi-circular fanlight with radial glazing bars.
Hood supported on carved consoles. Sash windows throughout with glazing bars
and simple surrounds. Paired bracket cornice. 4 gabled dormer with casement
windows and bargeboards. 2 and 3-storey C19 rear extension with 2-storey
canted bay. C17 street range:- 2 storeys. 10 irregularly spaced first floor
windows. Central entry to Gurney Court with reeded pilasters, moulded archi-
trave and flat hood. C20 shopfront to No. 31. C19 shopfront to Nos. 33 and
35 with 'Corinthian' pilasters and architrave. C18 sash windows throughout
with glazing bars. Fascia cornice. Paired bracket cornice above No. 35.
Central dormer over No. 31. 3 dormer gables with sash windows over Nos. 33
and 35. Late C16 north range, yard facade:- 2 storeys. 6 irregularly spaced
first floor windows. Panelled door at extreme right with simple surround and
rectangular fanlight and hood on plain consoles. Left-hand off-centre partly
glazed door within C18 surround. 3 steps up. Pair of partly glazed french-
doors with rectangular fanlight and 3 steps up at extreme left-side. Sash
windows with glazing bars. Box cornice. 3 small dormers with C20 casements.
Early C18 south range, yard facade:- 2 storeys. 5 irregularly spaced first
floor windows. Panelled door at extreme right with eared surround and con-
soles supporting small hood in single storey extension. Sash windows with
glazing bars to left-side and C20 mullion and transome windows to right.
Box cornice. Plaques to Elizabeth Fry (1780 - 1845) and Harriet Martineau
(1802 - 1812), both of whom were born here.
