Country house. House of c.1700 by Britten much remodelled and extended in
1887 by Edmond Tyrel de Poix. Red brick; steeply pitched plain tiled roofs
with crested ridges. Two storeys and attics, double pile plan. Main facade
to the south with seven bays arranged 2:3:2, reflecting the facade of the
original house. Sashes without glazing bars with rubbed arches over openings.
Ground floor has two wide canted outer bays and two sashes flanking central
square entrance porch with moulded and fluted brick pilasters supporting
entablature. 2-leaf half-glazed-door with rectangular tripartite fanlight
with leaded glazing. Canted bays and porch have balustrade with brick corner
piers and stone urn-balusters. Central glazed doors giving access from first
floor to porch roof. Dentilled cornice below attic level. Attic fenestration
repeats the 2:3:2 rhythm, the outer bays closely-set under a single gable.
Shaped attic gables on moulded stone kneelers. Stone balustrades linking
gables. Central geometric window to roof space. Shaped east and west double
gables; gable chimneys with panelled tops and terracotta decoration. Chimney
stack off-centre to east on ridge line. Lower C19 2-storey range to east:
sashes without glazing bars and two 4-light mullioned windows with Gothic
heads. Moulded brick string course at first floor level. Panelled eaves
parapet with four shaped gables. Shaped east gable with panelled chimney
stack; central ridge stack. On the west gable of the main house, a C19
conservatory, 7 x 4 bays, of timber and iron construction. North elevation
of five bays with central square entrance porch with two leaded cross windows
flanking doorway. Above, a large 4-light C19 staircase window with ovolo
moulded mullions and transoms under a four centred rubbed brick arch with
stone dripmould. Shaped gable with geometric attic window. The outer bays
two windows wide: sashes with glazing bars, gauged arches with keystones
over openings. Brick pilasters with dentilled cornice below attic level.
Shaped attic gables with twin sashes without glazing bars; low panelled brick
parapet below gables. Lower C19 range to east, with large glazed skylight
to dining room; coped parapets conceal roof. To the east a walled courtyard
with four-centred entrance archway dated E de P 1887. At the south-east
corner an attached gardener's cottage: red brick with black glazed pantile
roof, pointed arched windows with leaded lights; internal chimney stack at
east gable; decorative bargeboards. Interior of main house retains some
good early C18 work, notably the plasterwork of the library ceiling and the
Drawing Room fireplace and dado panelling. Large gilded staircase lantern
acquired from Mentmore House.
