7/39 No.22 (The Malthouse)
GV II
House and maltings. C17 and C18/19. Rubble and brick with some timber-
framing; old plain tile roofs with brick ridge stacks. Complex plan: 2-unit
house range has one-unit wings at rear, on right, and front, on left;
adjoining on right, the end of a 5-bay maltings which projects to rear. One-
storey plus attics; entrance and 3-light casement under single timber lintel
with pitch-hole over; similar arrangement on right with further 2-light
casement beyond; to left, C18/19 brick wing (probably rebuilt) has 2-course
string at eaves level, 4-light casement, and 3-light casement in gable. Roof
is continuous over all parts with hip to return on right; left-hand gable is
timber-framed with brick infill. Interior has large fireplaces, one (in front
wing) flanked by winder stair; second stair in rear wing which has no direct
connection with house. The house incorporates a timber-framed cross-wall with
raised sill, and its gable, infilled with brick, survives in the roof-space.
The former maltings retains part of the maltings floor, and has 4 trusses with
curved principals terminating at a collar below the upper purlin (probably
C17). The furthermost truss probably lowered. Rear gable of the maltings
has a dovecote. Maltsters are recorded here in 1730 and in the early C19.
