4/21 The Grey House (formerly
11-8-61 listed as The Grey House and
G.V. II house adjoining)
House, formerly 2 houses. C18 and C19. Brick, partly roughcast
and colourwashed, with hipped slate roof. First floor band,
chamfered eaves, single ridge and 3 side wall stacks. 2 and 3
storeys, 5 plus 3 bays. Irregular L-plan. Main west front has 2
facades. To left, central rebated timber doorcase with scroll
brackets to hood, and panelled door with overlight, flanked by 2
glazing bar sashes with segmental heads. Above, 5 similar
sashes. Adjoining dwarf brick boundary wall with cambered ashlar
coping and cast iron railing, 2 terminal and 2 gate piers,
ashlar, with moulded pyramidal caps. Facade to right has central
glazing bar sash, flanked by single canted 2-storey bay windows
with dentillated cornices and flat lead roofs. Each has 3
glazing bar sashes. Above, central glazing bar sash with
shouldered architrave, and scrolled brackets to pediment.
Flanked by 3 glazing bar sashes. Above again, 3 glazing bar
sashes with shouldered architraves. South front has to right, 2
storey rear wing. Off-centre Doric porch with antae and plain
cornice. Panelled door with traceried fanlight. To left, 2
round headed casements. To right, 2 French windows with
overlights. Above, to right, 3 glazing bar sashes with segmental
heads. At rear, 2 two storey wings and C20 billiard room, all
with hipped slate roofs. Interior, refurnished c.1975, retains
C18 stair with wreathed handrail, turned newels, and stick
balusters. Similar secondary stairs with winder. 4 C18 panelled
doors.
