NY 65 SE KNARESDALE WITH KIRKHAUGH BURNSTONES

12/142 Burnstones Farmhouse

GV II


Former Inn, now house. C18 extended and then heightened in early C19. Rubble,
partly rendered, with tooled quoins and dressings; vermiculate quoins to 2nd
floor. Slate roof with rendered stacks. 3 storeys, 1 and 3 bays. 3-bay
section has central panelled double doors in chamfered stone surround under
C20 glazed porch, flanked by 20-pane sash windows. Similar windows above flank
20-pane fixed light with opening section; 12-pane sashes to 2nd floor and in
left bay. All windows have tooled stone surrounds, the 12-pane sashes with
slightly projecting sills. Vermiculate blocks flank jambs of 2nd floor windows.
Ridge and gable stacks. Set in the front of the new porch is a stone formerly
above the door, inscribed: Nichlos Moor

Right return, rendered, has 2 ground floor casements, the left with Gothick
glazing bars. Rear elevation,rendered, shows 2 adjacent gabled wings with 15-
pane sashes lighting stair. Stack on left gable.
