Small country house. 1807-11 with mid-C19 additions by James Trubshaw
Junior, master builder. Extremely fine sandstone ashlar; hipped slate
roof invisible behind blocking course; corniced ashlar stacks on lines
of hips. Entrance front: of 4 bays, plinth, raised string at first-
floor level and cornice; glazing bar sashes, the ground-floor windows
set in shallow arch-headed reveals; slight break to inner bays with
corniced single-storey tetrastyle Tuscan porte-cochere; glazed double
doors and matching side lights. Garden front: of 6 uninterrupted bays
similar to front. Orangery and service courtyard to rear. Interior:
entrance hall with paired doors (one to right a dummy) and central
fireplace in arch-headed reveal. Stair hall rises to full height of
centre of building with 3-bay round-arched arcades to east and west
sides of first floor and elliptical cupola, fully glazed with battered
sides; cantilevered stone staircase with cast balustrade in criss-
cross pattern taken down and wrapped around curtail newel. Drawing
Room has fine plaster wall panels and elliptical ends to east and
west.
