Built in circa 1502 by a wealthy clothier, William Jacob. It probably
replaced the earlier timber cross. The stepped base is original but
the octagonal shaft with capital carved with fleur-de-lys and ball finial
is C18 (the shaft has the carved date 1725). The market held on this
site was licenced by the crown in 1257 and continued until its decline
in the C18. (Scheduled ancient monument).
