ST 8260 BRADFORD-ON-AVON THE SHAMBLES
2/308 The Post Office
GV II
Post office. 1901 and 1936. Randomly coursed squared Bath stone with a Roman
tile roof. Arts and Crafts style making particular effort to fit into its mixed
urban surrounding. Two storeys and attics. Four bay front to the Shambles with
the 1936 extension apparently being the two left bays but the Edward VIII cipher
and date is on bay 3. From left: Entrance bay with taking in door (for
mailbags) above, under hood. Large 5 light small paned mullion & transom window
with integral clock and posting box. 5 light window above. Bays 3 and 4 were
perhaps refaced in 1936. 3 light mullion and transom windows flank door with
hood on brackets, 3 light windows above. The corner is turned with a bartizon
turret with a 3 light window. Return front of 3 bays. Bay one has a 2 light
mullion and transom window below and a 4 light window in attic gable. Bay 2 has
two 2 light mullion and transom windows with a 5 light window above and a
segmental headed gable. 2 corbelled stacks. The third bay is plainer and is
perhaps also 1936. A post office retaining its 1936 appearance unchanged and
carrying a very rare cipher. It is in the centre of Bradford on Avon and has
very important group value.
