C18 frontage. Ashlar, 2 storeys. On 1st floor 2 sash windows in reveals,
glazing bars. Ground floor has good C18 shop-front in two angular wooden
bays of slight projection, one each side of central door. Each window
is divided by glazing bars into 32 panes. Continuous wooden fascia and
cornices. Bays supported on square section stone piers, two to each bay.
Narrow double doors, half glazed, with glazing bars. Rear of premises
appears to be of medieval origin, probably C15. Elevation fronting Coppice
Hill has a single-stage buttress with weathering and a 3-light square-headed
window with leaded lights and concave-moulded stone mullions. To right
is a passage-way leading to rear with chamfered square-headed stone archway.
Passage roof shows timber joists on stone corbels. To the right of this
passage are modern garage doors, with remains of a Tudor fireplace with
4-centred moulded arch inside to right.
All listed buildings in The Shambles form a group with King's Arms Hotel,
Nos 2, 5 and 6 Coppice Hill, Nos 27 to 29 (consec) Silver Street and No
2 Kingston Road.
