6/15 Stone House Farmhouse
- II*
House. Early C17. Squared sandstone of irregular courses. Some timber-framing in
the rear wall of the cross-wing. Plain-tiled gable roofs having parapets of
moulded stone with apex finials, now eroded, and obelisks of grey sandstone to
the parapet kneelers. Ridge stack of sandstone with 4 diagonally set red brick
shafts above the ridge. Projecting side stack to the cross-wing of sandstone
with three diagonally set shafts of red brick. Plan of 2 unit main range with
cross-wing. One storey and attic. Original principal front to the garden. Hall
window has 3-light cross-frame casement with original ovolo-moulded architrave
and transom and mullion. The parlour doorway has a depressed arch with
continuous chamfer. This door has now been partly blocked and partly
fenestrated. The rear wall to the yard has a lobby-entry doorway in similar arch
with a boarded door. There is a similar 3-light casement to the parlour and at
the gable end another 3-light ovolo-mullion window to light the first floor
chamber over the parlour. The cross-wing is in 2 bays and 2 storeys. Main
elevation, now overlooking the garden, has similar stonework and roof details to
the main range. There is a 3-light casement with ovolo-mullions at both ground
and first floors and each has a moulded label. The rear wall overlooking the
yard is framed. Small C19 dairy extensions have been made on the side and end of
the cross-wing. Interior: Dog-leg staircase with landing leading from
lobby-entry. Original newel with symmetrical turning to baluster and ball
finial. Back-to-back inglenook hearths. Plain unstopped chamfers to main beams.
At first floor raised tie beams and paired wind bracing to each of two tiers of
through purlins with Queen-struts. There is a narrower bay to the lobby-entry
and chimney bay. The service end was in the cross-wing and had the solar or
chamber over. At ground floor the partitions between buttery and pantry still
remain.
