House. Late C17. Red brick; hipped plain tile roof; brick ridge stacks. Aligned
north-west/south-east. South-west front: 3 storeys, reduced proportions to
second floor, moulded brick eaves cornice. 5 bays: 12-pane glazing bar sashes
with gauged brick heads and raised keystones, some of the windows are blind and
painted in imitation of glazing bar sashes. Central 6-panel door within a C19
porch with cast iron colonettes at the angles, and hipped roof. North-east
front: 3 bays; 16-pane glazing bar sashes with gauged brick heads and raised
keystones, casement to ground floor left, tall stair window to centre. C19
six-panel, double leaf door to centre with rectangular overlight. Late C18
extension wing attached to the left: one ogee headed window with Gothic glazing
bars, and doorway to the left with straight head. 2-bay north-west and
south-east sides. Interior: late C17 dogleg staircase with closed string, turned
balusters and panelled dado. Dunton Hall is said to have been the home of Dr.
Samuel Johnson's maternal grandparents, Cornelius and Anne Ford.
