2.
A fine Elizabethan red brick gateway built at the same time as Melford
Hall and in the same style (circa 1559). The 2 gabled lodges flanking
the gate-way are Victorian but are completely in style and form a pleasant
composition with the original gateway which has a 4-centred moulded brick
archway with a stone panel above carved with a coat of arms. The archway
is flanked by octagonal towers rising from massive square bases, broached
to form the octagons. These towers are similar in design to those of
Melford Hall, with a range of leaded windows below an ogee domed roof
with shell ornamented lunettes and later elaborate decorative wrought
iron finials. The single storeyed lodges to the north and south of the
gateway have parapets and stopped gables. The windows are leaded casements
with moulded brick reveals and square hood moulds. On the north and south
sides there are external chimney stacks, each with 2 octagonal shafts.
Roofs tiled.
