A timber-framed and plastered house comprising a medieval hall house
with a cross wing at the north end. In the C16 a jettied parlour cross
wing was added to the south end (now underbuilt with a C19 shop front).
Originally a single dwelling house, it is now 3 tenements. The south
cross wing has C19 external features and is of 1 window range double-hung
sashes (3-light on the 1st storey). The gable has good C19 ornamental
bargeboards. The internal features of this wing are particularly good,
with heavy close stuccoing and ceiling beams carved with a folded leaf
motif and moulded. The rooms are unusually high. The 1st storey has
a fine C16 fireplace, carved with folded leaf ornamentation and a central
shield a monogram with what appears to be a merchants mark above. Within
the fireplace is smaller bolection moulded surround of late C17 date,
with a Regency raised basket grate. The roof has the remains of decorated
crown post roof. The hall range is of 2 storeys, fronted in brick and
painted, with C18 or early C19 features. 2 window range, horizontal sliding
sashes on the 1st storey and 1 double-hung sash window with glazing bars
on the ground storey and a former early-mid C19 former shop window and
doorway. The C19 brick facing is built out in front of the original framing
but little is exposed internally of the original timber-framing. At the
rear there are 2 gabled wings of late C17 date. The north cross wing
has 1 window range on the 1st storey, a C19 splayed bay with double-hung
sashes. The ground storey has a late C19 shop front. The timber-framing
is exposed on the 1st storey with modern brick nogging. The gable has
ornamental carved bargeboards, probably original, with a modern finial.
Probably this was the service and solar of the medieval house. Roofs
tiled.
