4/8 Whitehouse Farmhouse
GV II
Former farmhouse, mid C16; extended late C17. 2 storeys. 3-cell plan with
cross-passage and lobby entrances. Timber-framed and plastered. Roman
pantiled roof, once thatched; an axial chimney of red brick. Mainly mid C20
small-pane casements; others of mid C19 with transomes. Mid C20 6-panelled
entrance door at rear. Typical unmoulded C16 framing: chamfered exposed 1st
floor members in hall and parlour, arch wind-braced studwork, clasped purlin
roof, and a hall window with chamfered square mullions. A rear wing of 3 bays
and 2 cells was probably added late C17 as a bakehouse and dairy: plain
framing and unusually good butt-purlin roof for date.
