Description

CROWFIELD STONHAM ROAD
TM 15 NW
3/19 Church Farmhouse
GV II
Former farmhouse, c.1550-1570. 2 storeys and attics. 3-cell cross-passage
entrance plan. Timber-framed and plastered with C20 cable-pargetting in large
panels. Thatched roof with one eyebrow dormer. An axial C17 chimney of red
brick. Mainly C20 small-pane casements; a number of C16 diamond-mullioned
windows are exposed and glazed. Mid C20 gabled plaintiled entrance porch with
pair of framed and boarded doors. Unusually complete framing of above-average
quality although unmoulded: good close-studwork; chamfered floor joists in
hall and parlour, unchamfered in the service cell (which formerly was divided
by a stud partition). Good clasped-purlin roof with reduced principal rafters
and cranked windbraces. A large open fireplace in the hall has a lintel
reused from a timber-framed chimney, perhaps preceding the present one.
