The Old House
(Formerly listed as 2 cottages 400m north west of Gray's Farmhouse)
II
Farmhouse, latterly used as two cottages. In two sections of differing heights: late medieval or C16 to left, parlour addition of c.1600 to right. Timber framed, mainly plastered, with a pantiled roof. Two storeys with an attic to the right hand section. Various old casement windows; one window in the right gable has diamond-leaded panes. Boarded entrance door. Gable stack (rebuilt in white brick) to earlier range at the junction of the two sections.
The main part is intact although the frame is papered over: exposed joisting, original newel stairs (two flights) and floorboards. The earlier section has been reduced in length; a floor was inserted in early C17 and the range was raised about 0.8m. and re-roofed in C18.
