Description

ATHELINGTON
TM 27 SW
5/3
Barn 250m south west of
Athelington Hall
II
Barn. In 2 sections: to the east are 3 bays of an early C17 barn; attached to
the west are 2 higher bays of later C17 date. Timber framed and
weatherboarded with a corrugated iron roof. Earlier part has intact full-
height studs with smaller studs interspersed at a later date. There was an
integral upper floor of which one floor beam remains and another is cut
through. These are braced to the wallposts from above by later knees. The
tie beams have been cut out. 2 of the trusses have evidence for lap-joints on
the wallposts, presumably for tie beam braces. Intact roof with one row of
clasped purlins. Later section has full-height studs with primary braces; the
bay adjoining the earlier work is the cart entrance. Clasped-purlin roof.
Structure of easternmost bay of barn not visible at time of survey.
