SOUTHOLT
Barn 20m south east of White House Farmhouse

GV
II

Barn. Early-mid C17. Timber framed, mainly weatherboarded, some tarred daub
to west; north gable end and roof are clad in corrugated iron. 3 bays, the
one at the north end about twice the length of the others. Full-height oak
studding, about 80% intact, with curved braces at the angles. One tie beam
retains both braces to the wallposts, another has one missing; a third tie
beam in the north bay may be a later insertion. End half of north bay has
evidence for diamond-mullioned windows, indicating it was once floored over
for stabling. Cart entrance in centre bay, with brick threshing floor. Roof
has one row of clasped purlins and 2-way arched wind bracing, stepped at its
junction with each principal rafter. Included for group value.
