29.7.55 (formerly listed as
Church of St Margaret)
- II*
Former parish church, converted to residential use 1986-7. Medieval, restored
1877 and 1884. Nave, chancel, south tower. Flint rubble with stone
dressings; chancel has repairs in C16-C17 red brick. Roof of C19 plaintiles.
Late C14 square 2-stage tower with 3-stage diagonal buttresses to south face.
Crenellated parapet with flushwork. Base of tower forms porch: much-weathered
moulded entrance arch, the innermost part enriched with fleurons. Belfry
openings have missing tracery. Core of nave substantially of c.1200.
Original south doorway with semi-circular keel-moulded arch, the hoodmould
with dogtooth ornament; one order of colonnettes in the jambs. 2 lancet
windows of similar date. C14 north nave doorway with unmoulded 2-centred
arch; remains of stoup to west. Other nave windows are in Perpendicular
style, much renewed C19. 2 flush rooflights of 1986-7. Chancel probably of
C15 date: to the north, a single 2-light window with square head; to the
south, a 2-light window with depressed 2-centred arch and a C19 window with a
pair of trefoil-headed lights under a square head. 3-light east window,
renewed in C19. Interior. C15 arch-braced chancel roof in 4 bays, the high
collars supporting king-posts to a ridge piece, below which is east-west
bracing. Nave roof is of late C19 date, based broadly on the chancel roof.
No chancel arch, Chancel has ogee piscina, probably C15. Rood stair in south
east nave. Furnishings and monuments removed prior to conversion.
