GV II*
Farmhouse. Mid C16; small C19 brick wing to rear. Timber framed and
plastered; pantiled roof with glazed black tiles to the front. 2 storeys and
attic, with a jettied first floor to the front. 3 cell form, originally with
cross-passage entry. Small-paned casement windows of C19. The timber frame
is of high quality with heavy, very closely-spaced studwork throughout and
with tension-bracing. Both hall and parlour have fine fully-moulded beam and
joist ceilings, with run-out stops; the moulding is continued down the storey
posts. In the hall the moulding stops at the position of the cross-passage,
where there was once a screen. There are 2 good original windows on the first
floor with chamfered mullions and evidence for others. The roof has 2 rows of
unstaggered butt purlins, an early example of this type. At the time of
survey the house was under gradual renovation, with the internal stack being
rebuilt and the attic floor joists removed together with part of the first
floor structure at the service end. The fine linenfold panelling once on the
first floor is now in store and due to be eventually reinstated. Moated site.
