4/62 Meadow Farmhouse
- II
House. A complex of building of at least 3 dates: C16 core, early C17 parlour
addition to left and a lower early C18 range to the right; restored from 3
farm cottages in the 1970's. Timber framed and plastered, the left hand gable
end rebuilt in red brick; some colourwashed brick to rear. Pantiled roof. 2
storeys with attic above the parlour. Various mid C20 casement windows; mid
C20 6-panel door, cornice on imported enriched console brackets. Each range
has an internal stack; the left hand stack, which has been rebuilt,
incorporates a stone tablet carved with 2 blank shields enclosed by vine leaf
ornament. The timber frame is exposed internally although there has been much
later alteration and rebuilding. The parlour has a floorbeam with shallow
double-curve moulding and enriched stop-chamfers with bar; there are also
remains of a moulded cornice. The room over the parlour has good timbering
with cranked arched corner-bracing and evidence of 2 original windows. The
room adjoining the parlour has heavy unchamfered joists and a main beam with
broach stop-chamfers, probably C16; this ceiling appears to be inserted.
There is evidence that this section of the house has been raised c.0.4m; in
the original part a small 3-light diamond-mullioned window has been exposed.
