Somerleyton Hall

Lodge and gateway to Somerleyton Hall (qv.4/50) Circa 1846 by John Thomas
for Sir Morton Peto. Red brick with stone dressings. Slated roof, most of
the slates of fishscale pattern. 1½ storeys. 4 projecting wings, each with a
shaped gable. Casement windows; facing the road a 4-light canted bay window
in stone. The wing facing the gateway projects only slightly and contains a
6-panel entrance door. Central axial stack with a cruciform group of flues.
To the west are convex walls of brick and stone, about 2m high, with some
pierced upper sections. Stone gate piers with pierced strapwork, each
surmounted by an embellished coat of arms. Wrought iron gate.
