GV II
Retaining boundary wall of the formal gardens to the west of Somerleyton Hall.
Circa 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. Retaining section to Park red
brick, otherwise stone. Circa lm high to the gardens. Both pierced and solid
sections, with square piers, some surmounted by urns. At the south east
corner are 2 stone benches: the one in the north return of the wall has a
circular back panel carved with a basket of fruit and flowers and was
originally flanked by a pair of bronze vases now on the terrace retaining wall
(Item 4/55). The bench at the south end of the terrace has a back carved with
swans, and terminal vases supported by 4 storks. At the south west corner,
framing the vista down the Lime avenue, 2 Portland stone statues by Thomas:

north side opposite, 2 piers with tall tapering finials crowned by small urns
(one pier included with the continuation of this walling on the north side of
the gardens under Item 4/57). Forms part of a garden included in the HBMC
