3/15 No.25(Briar Cottage)
- No.27 (Shepherd's Close)
GV II
House, formerly divided into 3, now into 2. Probably mid C17, but using some
older timbers. One-and-a-half storeys; basic 3-cell plan. Timber-framed and
plastered, with thatched roof. An internal chimney-stack with a plain red
brick shaft. C18 3-light and 2-light casement windows with cast iron frames,
pintle hinges and square-leaded panes; one eyebrow dormer with C20 diamond-
leaded panes to 2-light casement window. 2 plank doors. Interior of No.25
has timbers exposed and evidence of alterations and later partitioning; reused
timbers, some with external weathering; plain clasped side purlin roof with no
principal rafters, but several reused smoke-blackened timbers from a medieval
house. No 27 (to west of stack) has a very fine carved and moulded late C15
ceiling-beam placed in front of the chimney-stack. This has been shortened,
and clearly came from an important local building.
