House. C15. One-and-a-half storeys: 3-cell plan, originally with open hall.
Timber-framed and rendered; thatched roof, gabled at the south end, half-
hipped on the north. An internal chimney-stack with a plain rebuilt shaft. A
small C20 porch addition on the east, and a single-storey lean-to with tiled
roof on the north end. Various small C19 2-light casement windows with a
single bar to lights, and 3 eyebrow dormers. Frame in 4 bays, the 2 central
bays the former open hall, with an inserted ceiling, and chimney-stack at the
upper end. The partition wall at the lower end retains the 2 service
doorways, with their outer arches formed of one piece of curved timber, and
the inner arch with small applied spandrels. The ceiling in the service end,
which must have been very low, has been replaced at a higher level. The
ground storey room at the upper (south) end has an exposed ceiling with plain,
flat, unchamfered joists. Rafter roof. The original timbers in the house,
which include much coppice-wood, are rather rough and irregular. The house
stands sideways-on to the road on the edge of Thelnetham Fen, and appears to
be the oldest surviving house in the parish.
