Almshouse row. Circa 1912 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Red Brick with ashlar dressings
to centre on brick plinth. Plain tiled roof with 4 tall ridge stacks , pediment and
columned cupola on rusticated square pedestal to centre. Flamboyant Baroque urns to
pediment ends. Central 1½ storey arch breaking through ashlar string below pediment
which also forms the lintel of flanking doorways with massive Baroque projecting
keystones. 4 windows, all casements, flanking central projection, the second from
the centre on both sides inset behind segment-head arches. Outer bays with narrow
segment-headed entrance arches.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
