3/51 Braboeuf Manor
II
Manor house, now administration block for College of Law. Late c16,
circa 1590, with C19 front and C20 extensions to left and rear. Timber-
framed core with Bargate stone front and sandstone dressings. Plain
tiled roofs. Main range with gabled wing to front left. Four gabled
wings at right angles to rear and extensions set back to left. Two
storeys with attics in gable to left and under two gabled casement dormers
to right. Corbelled end stacks to right and left, further stacks to
rear. Stone dressed, mullioned, casement fenestration, those windows on
ground floor with stone transomes. Regular facade of three windows to
both floors with additional first floor window over projecting, two storey
gabled entrance bay to left of centre. Domed wood cupola above. Stone
dressed chamfered and moulded door surround, arched, to porch recess with
panelled door behind. Single storey angle bay window projecting to end
left from extensions set back to left. Two storey range behind with
arched casement fenestration and end stacks. Further extensions to left,
C20, not included.
Interior: Extensive C17 and C20 panelling in ground floor rooms.
Chamfered spine beams and joists in ceilings exposed: Two good C17
overmantles to fireplaces, panelled with strapwork and foliage decorations,
some figure carving. Fireplace in former library particularly notable:
en gadrooned base over stone fire surround with triple arched arcaded top
on squat Ionic pilasters and scrolls in decorated entrabature. Squat
figures to scroll pedestals. Further panelled and plasterwork ceilings.
