Monks Green Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, now house. C17, remodelled in C18, enlarged in C19. Red brick with
remains of yellow colour-wash, red tile roof, brick chimney. The plan is now
almost rectangular, composed of an L-shaped C17 building with north-south
principal axis, and additions on the east side making an interlocking L-shape, and
now under a 3-span roof. Two storeys, the north front with a roof-hip over each
of the 3 ranges of building; the westernmost of these has a 3-course band
(carried round the west side and rear), a C19 gabled porch next to the junction
with the centre range, and an enlarged transomed 6-light casement to the right,
under the segmental head of a former 2-light window; the centre range has a
similar window with similar remains of an earlier window above it; the left-hand
element has a low 3-light casement; at 1st floor there are 1, 2, and 1 cross-
window casements. Large corniced chimney stack in valley between west and
centre ranges, another chimney in the other valley, and a side-wall chimney at
the right-hand end. (Modern single-storey addition at this end, not of special
interest.) At the rear the easternmost range is set back and has a doorway with
a canopy, a 2-light casement to the right and 2 others above; the centre and
west elements each have a transomed 8-light casement at ground floor and a
cross-window above. Interior: the west range has stop-chamfered beams in both
ground floor rooms, a large inglenook fireplace in the south room (at the
partition to the centre range), an altered cross-corner fireplace in the other
room, and a central staircase between timber-framed partitions; the north end of
the centre (said to be C19 infilling) has a beam similar to those in the centre.
